Public Leadership Student

My name is Valerie Markel, and I am from Glenwood, Maryland. I am currently a freshman at the University of Maryland. I am majoring in Finance at the Robert H Smith Business school. I am a member of the Women in Business and Smith Finance group at the university. I am also a part of the Public Leadership Scholars program. I am really excited to be a part of a small community at a big school. What I want to get out of this program is hearing others' ideas about subjects that are hard to talk about. I want to dive deep into the topics of leadership. I enjoy learning about the characteristics of leaders and the types of leadership. I can then apply that to myself to learn how I can become a better leader. At college, I want to use the skills I am developing to gain hands-on work experiences. Most importantly, I want to have a growth mindset to help motivate me no matter how unprecedented these times are. ~ 10/22/2020
